Discover the only museum in the world dedicated to Pierre Bonnard!

Le Cannet is to Pierre Bonnard what Nice was to Matisse. The Musée Bonnard, which opened on June 25, 2011, is the only museum in the world that traces the work of Pierre Bonnard. It benefits from the “Musée de France” label and in addition to Pierre Bonnard’s works, one or two temporary exhibitions are presented each year. This membership of the “Musée de France” label has notably enabled the Bonnard Museum to host a lithograph on Toulouse-Lautrec and thus increase its visibility.

The Bonnard museum nevertheless welcomed nearly 150,000 visitors between 2011 and 2013, well before the Toulouse-Lautrec lithography, which testifies to the quality of the exhibition but also to the growing interest in the painter who died at Le Cannet.

The major part of the exhibition is devoted to Pierre Bonnard’s so-called maturity period, which corresponds to his time at Le Cannet, a period estimated to run from 1922 to 1947.

In order to retrace the life of Pierre Bonnard, the city of Cannes set out in search of Pierre Bonnard’s youth works, so as not to confine itself to the period when he was regularly at Le Cannet, and out of pedagogical concerns, with the aim of retracing his work in the best possible way.
Pierre Bonnard was a painter, decorator, illustrator, engraver, lithographer and sculptor. He therefore leaves behind him an immense body of work, essentially pictorial with an undeniable impressionist influence. The museum therefore tries to retrace his life and works.

The museum has also signed a partnership with the Musée d’Orsay, which aims to build a scientific project and make it easier to obtain loans from the museum. The Musée Bonnard therefore owes its cultural and artistic enrichment to its partnership with the Musée d’Orsay, but also to the Meyer Foundation, which supports it through a vast network of messène, which notably enabled it to acquire the masterpiece of L’Amandier, which is an oil on canvas =, naturally by Pierre Bonnard and dating from 1930.
